UL Changes Terminology: "Open Wiring is now "ER"

The UL Standards Technical Panel for Power Cables has voted YES to replace “Open Wiring” with the term “ER”.

As of March 19, 2004, all Tray Cables with “open wiring” approval will be marked “TC-ER”. “TC-ER” defines a tray-rated cable with an “exposed run”. Per UL, “ER” must be marked on the cable, not the full term “exposed run”.

Lapp USA has already begun to revise the pertinent specifications in order to be in compliance with the new standard. Therefore, all new manufacturing of UL Type TC cables with “Open Wiring” will be marked (UL) TC-ER, per the newly revised standard.

The revision can be found under Standard 1277, paragraphs 1.2, 22.1, 23.1, 28.1, and 29.1. It is a change in terminology only with no change to the mechanical or electrical properties of the cable. The end use application remains the same, allowing the cable to run an unlimited distance from the cable tray to the utilization equipment secured at a minimum of every six feet.
